Dear Whitby Community,
Most times in schools, Annual Reports feel a bit out of sequence. While they are published — as the name aptly suggests — every year, the data within reflects the work of the prior year. And, because of this, it celebrates the successes of the organization and the investment of its donors after the fact. Moreover, since fiscal and calendar years never line up, we audit our finances and share them with families each fall, rather than in December or January.
At Whitby, we take a different approach. Yes, we publish last year’s financial statements and we acknowledge and celebrate the philanthropic investments of families, alumni, and friends from the previous twelve months. But, instead of producing a magazine of articles and profiles highlighting last year’s successes, we choose to produce the narrative content of our Annual Report in real time by bringing it to life every fall as part of our State of the School Celebration.
If you missed this year’s event, links to the faculty presentations are included in this report. If you were there, then you saw firsthand what our talented teachers and alumni are doing on our campus and in communities around the world right now.
Within this context, our list of donors takes a different shape. While their gift during the 2017-18 school year helped Whitby achieve its financial goals, the impact of their giving on our community is happening now.
Here’s how these generous gifts have been invested: recruiting and retaining faculty, providing hundreds of professional development hours to administrators, teachers and staff, expanding programs across campus, and providing nothing short of an extraordinary education to each and every child in our care.
So, thank you for your gifts and for your impact on teaching and learning today!
Sincerely,
Jason Anklowitz
To Whitby’s Faculty, Families, Alumni, and Friends:
Thank you for twelve wonderful years together and for sharing in my family’s Whitby journey. It has been a privilege to serve on Whitby’s Board of Trustees for nine years and an honor to Chair the Board of Trustees for the past seven years.
One of my favorite responsibilities has always been to thank all families who gave of their time, talent, and treasure to support the exceptional work of our faculty and staff. Because of you, Whitby is able to offer an extraordinary program, recruit and retain outstanding teachers, and shape the future of our community of young learners in meaningful ways.
We create these opportunities together, so thank you for supporting Whitby!
Reflecting on my time as a member of the Whitby community, I am humbled by the milestones we have achieved. Together, we expanded and improved our campus facilities, built new learning and activity spaces, introduced programs like the Makerspace, increased financial aid, and completed more successful accreditation reviews than I can count! But, most importantly, I had the privilege to witness my two daughters grow to be confident, principled and open-minded Whitby citizens. I imagine that is true for all of us, and it is why we chose Whitby.
Once again, thank you to all who have partnered with Whitby by contributing to our capital campaign, donating to the Whitby Fund and supporting our Gala each and every year.
Sincerely,
Patricia Franklin
Whitby’s Annual State of the School Celebration is held each fall to give parents an opportunity to learn more about the financial health of the school, acknowledge the school's achievements, and learn about the vision for the future. The event also highlights a number of faculty within the program as a means to showcase Whitby's programmatic excellence and continuum.
We've included a few clips below, starting with an introductory message below. If you'd like to watch the entire celebration, please visit www.localive.tv/whitbyschool.

The Whitby Fund and Annual Benefit fuel innovation and positively impact teaching and learning across all grade levels. Our greatest resource is our people, and that's why 70% of Whitby's operating expenses are invested in faculty and staff.
Gifts to the Whitby Fund and the Annual Benefit help us recruit and retain our extraordinary faculty.
